ILESA, OSUN STATE –The ancient city of Ilesa in Osun State today witnessed a momentous occasion as Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, Ajimoko III, was formally crowned as the 41st Owa Obokun Adimula and Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland. The grand coronation ceremony, held at the Obokungbusi Hall, drew a remarkable gathering of Nigeria’s political, traditional, and business elite, signifying the immense prestige and importance of the Owa Obokun stool.
Among the prominent figures gracing the historic event were former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and the revered Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi. The host Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, was also present, alongside his predecessor and current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Other notable attendees included Dr. Deji Adeleke, Senator Francis Fadahunsi (representing Osun East Senatorial District), and a host of traditional rulers from across Yorubaland, including the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Laoye Ghandi, and the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi. The presence of such a diverse and influential delegation underscored the widespread acceptance and anticipation surrounding Oba Haastrup’s ascension to the throne.
The coronation is the culmination of a 10-day programme of activities that commenced on May 16, encompassing various cultural celebrations, traditional rites, sporting events, and community outreach initiatives. Oba Haastrup, a seasoned businessman and former Deputy Governor of Osun State, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. His journey from politics and business to traditional leadership was highlighted by President Tinubu in his congratulatory message, delivered through Minister Oyetola, who lauded Oba Haastrup’s leadership abilities, character, and commitment to traditional institutions.
Security was notably tight around the venue, with operatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) deployed to manage the large crowd and ensure a seamless event. This comprehensive security arrangement followed an earlier court ruling that declined to stop the coronation, allowing the ceremony to proceed as scheduled.
The atmosphere in Ilesa was one of palpable excitement and jubilation, with many residents shutting their businesses to partake in the festivities. The coronation not only marks a new chapter for Ijesaland but also signifies a renewed commitment to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people.
With Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, Ajimoko III, now formally on the throne, the people of Ijesaland look forward to a reign of unity, progress, and prosperity. The celebrations are set to conclude with an interdenominational thanksgiving service on Sunday, May 25, at the Otapete Methodist Cathedral.
