A heartwarming story from rural Ethiopia has captured the attention of an entire nation and now the world after a 12‑year‑old boy rushed his sick chicken to a human hospital, driven by pure compassion and childlike devotion. What began as a simple act of love has turned into a viral moment celebrating innocence, empathy, and the unbreakable bond between a boy and his beloved bird.

ValidViewNetwork reports that 12‑year‑old Markos Abaye, who grew up in rural Ethiopia, took his sick chicken to Denbecha Primary Hospital in the Amhara region after at‑home treatments failed.

A nurse at the hospital recorded the moment, and the video quickly amassed more than 770,000 views on TikTok, touching thousands of Ethiopians, ValidViewNetwork reports.

In the video, Markos gently cradles the chicken and tells the nurse: “She is wheezing.” The nurse, Umer Chane, responds kindly: “Listen, there are doctors who treat animals. You have to take her there. This is a hospital for humans. Okay, dear?” Markos later took the chicken to a veterinarian, where she received proper treatment.

The boy’s uncle and guardian, Kelemework Amogne, had suggested seeking professional help, unaware that Markos would head straight to a human hospital. Markos did not know that veterinarians existed in Denbecha. His uncle said the boy was so distressed by the chicken’s illness that he stopped studying and eating, ValidViewNetwork reports.

Markos told the BBC: “My chicken is better now. I’m going to give her the 12 eggs I saved so she can hatch them.” His uncle added that Markos is extremely close to the bird, watching her footprints, building tiny bridges so she doesn’t fall into holes, and even feeding neighbours’ chickens.

Markos went to live with his uncle in August 2023 after conflict erupted in Amhara between Ethiopia’s army and local militias known as Fano. His grandparents, fearing for his safety, sent him to live with Kelemework and gifted him the chicken as a parting token of love.

Nurse Umer Chane said he was moved by the boy’s tenderness: “I could see the kindness in his face. He hugged the chicken tightly, worried about her condition, even as others tried to make fun of him.” He recorded the video and shared it online, unaware it would go viral.

When Markos returned home, he told his uncle that “people laughed at him,” but the family only discovered where he had taken the chicken after seeing the video online. Kelemework said the overwhelming response “seemed like a dream,” ValidViewNetwork reports.

After the story gained national attention, a local poultry company announced it would donate 100 chickens to Markos and provide him with training in poultry farming — a gesture that could change the boy’s future forever.

In a world often hardened by conflict, cynicism, and cruelty, Markos’ story is a reminder that compassion still thrives in the smallest corners of humanity. His devotion to a single chicken has inspired millions, proving that kindness even when misunderstood has the power to move nations. What began as a worried boy seeking help for a fragile bird has blossomed into a symbol of hope, innocence, and the extraordinary beauty of a child’s heart.
