……… I look up to Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of popular micro blogging site, Twitter.
A student of Apostolic Faith Secondary School, Abeokuta, James Adedayo Adeoba has emerged as one of the students with the best score in this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Ogun state.
Apostolic Faith Secondary School, Abeokuta was founded on 25th of September 2006 and the the school has proven again and again that what it lacks in age, it has in productivity. It is standing tall, shoulders high with most of the old and flying schools, ValidViewNetwork reports.
Adeoba who clocks 16 on Thursday (May 18) scored 340 in the UTME.
Speaking with ValidViewNetwork in an exclusive interview, the son of a Surveyor and business woman noted that being prayerful and committed to daily 4 hours study as well as learning from YouTube are the secrets to his achievement.
He said, “I like calculations subjects – chemistry, physics and mathematics.”
ValidViewNetwork reports that Adeoba adopted the maxim ” pray as if you would not read and read as if you would not pray”
According to Adeoba, : “I prayed and I read as much as possible, consulted different textbooks, I went on YouTube too. People have scored higher marks and they have documented steps and tips to achieving that, that was very helpful.
“I Iike to use 4 hours to read everyday.”
Adeoba who described himself as very inquisitive, said he look up to people like Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of popular micro blogging site, Twitter.
On his future ambition, Adeoba said he would like to become a cyber security expert or software engineer.
“I look up to people and I come up with questions, I am very inquisitive. I like people who defies the odds, people that do something different. I look up to those who do extraordinary things like Elon Musk and I also look up to my Dad.”
“I would like to study cyber security or software engineering because I believe that’s the future, that is where the world is driving towards and you have to go along with the trend to make it in the future. In the next 10 years almost everything we do will be dependent on technology.”
He expressed gratitude to God, his parents, siblings, teachers and class mates whom he said were very competitive.
With the UTME results of the school sighted by ValidViewNetwork, it shows that the students are really determined, focused and competitive as stated by Adeoba.
He advised other students to work hard and pray, stating that anything is possible.
“I am grateful to God, God has a reason for it, it’s not easy to read 4 hours everyday and it’s a big commitment. I’m also grateful to my family, my parents and siblings, they are very supportive academically, physically, morally, they all advice and help me a lot.”
The principal of the school, Dr. Adelaja Alade described Adeoba as a serious-minded student with leadership traits right from the junior classes.
The principal noted that 5 students of the school including Adeoba scored above 300 in the just concluded UTME.
This result from the school is a great plus for Ogun state and a challenge to other schools.
According to Dr. Alade, the school also incorporated trade subjects such as photography, fashion designing and catering into its curriculum.
“The school has facilities for boarding and day students, we have trade subjects because we believe that if we have students that cannot do well in the area of academics, they can maximise their potentials in projects like photography, garment making and catering craft.” The school is committed to ensuring that all our pupils are guided to fulfil their full potentials.
“In the last 3 years we have only one student that scored above 300 in UTME but the unique thing about this set is that 5 of them scored above 300.”
“We really thank God because we have 24 of them that scored above 250.”
This result from Apostolic Faith Secondary School, Abeokuta should normally attract the attention of the Alumni association of the school , the Ogun State government under the leadership of Prince Dapo Abiodun and other well meaning Nigerians, ValidViewNetwork believes.
Our young guys who have done us proud and have given us something to celebrate are worthy to be celebrated, guided and supported towards fulfilling the great dream ahead of them as they go into the next phase of their lives. They have reminded us once again that there is hope for our country, Nigeria.
On the state of education in Nigeria, Dr. Alade, a graduate of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta enjoined the government to review the educational curriculum in the tertiary level to meet the present realities and needs of the society.
“Our curriculum tend to produce job seekers rather than those that can provide jobs and when we look at it generally the curriculum for primary school has been altered, the same for secondary school but unfortunately we are still running with old curriculum for the tertiary institutions.
“we have enough universities both at state and federal level, what they need to do is how to expand the existing one to accommodate more students and restructure the curriculum in such a way that when graduates come out, they would be able to establish their own jobs and then reduce the rate of youth unemployment.”
He the government to provide more fund for education and address the issue of brain drain in the Ivory tower as well as incessant strike among academic and non-academic staff.
“Both state and federal government should increase funding in our education system so that we can stop this issue of strike from both non teaching and teaching staff so that the students program can be 4 years and we won’t have this issue of backlog of students not graduating on time.”
“Government should do something about the issue of brain drain in the Ivory tower to checkmate mass exodus of people from the university traveling abroad or from medical sciences traveling abroad to look for greener pasture. If they can stay here and develop, I want to believe Nigeria is a country that has hope,” he added.
