As Nigeria continues to grapple with the deaths of 25 people in the Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Ondo State, retired police officers have reportedly suspended a planned nationwide protest and fixed October 12 for its resumption.
The development adds another layer to the public response to the tragedy, which has already triggered mourning, investigations and renewed questions about the safety of Nigeria’s security institutions.
PROTEST PUT ON HOLD
According to the report supplied to ValidViewNetwork, the retired police officers decided to suspend their planned nationwide action following the Ondo aviation tragedy.
The group is expected to resume the protest on October 12.
ValidViewNetwork reports that details available on the latest announcement do not independently establish the full terms of the retirees’ decision or whether the suspension represents a permanent change in strategy.
Their decision should therefore be understood within the context of the national mourning surrounding the NAF crash.
ONDO CRASH CLAIMED 25 LIVES
The Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft, identified as NAF 931, crashed around Igbokoda in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State while travelling from Benin to Lagos.
Twenty passengers and five crew members were aboard. There were no survivors.
Recovery operations have been complicated by the swampy terrain, while military authorities have begun further efforts to locate and recover the main wreckage and other critical evidence.
PROTESTS AND NATIONAL SECURITY
The planned protest also brings renewed attention to the condition of retired police officers, an issue that has generated demonstrations in recent years.
Retired police officers have previously complained about pension arrangements and their treatment under the Contributory Pension Scheme.
ValidViewNetwork can confirm that those wider pension concerns predate the current NAF tragedy. The October 12 resumption date therefore needs to be viewed separately from the investigation into the Ondo crash.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
The immediate priority remains the recovery and investigation surrounding NAF 931, while the retirees’ protest plans will likely become clearer as October 12 approaches.
ValidViewNetwork authoritatively reports that the two issues should not be conflated: the NAF investigation concerns an aviation tragedy, while the retirees’ protest concerns their own demands and grievances. A responsible response to both issues requires transparency, lawful engagement and respect for the rights of citizens to demand accountability.
