Ghana’s cabinet has greenlit a formal bid to join the BRICS economic and geopolitical bloc, marking a strategic shift toward expanding the nation’s global partnerships and strengthening ties within the Global South.
Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the decision during a joint press appearance with visiting Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. According to Ablakwa, the administration under President John Dramani Mahama views membership in the emerging-economies bloc as a vital pathway to secure greater economic options, foster industrialization, and gain increased resource sovereignty.
Ablakwa noted that Ghana has already initiated steps to seek India’s backing for the application. While expressing strong sympathy for Ghana’s aspirations, Jaishankar emphasized that formal admission remains subject to collective evaluation by the wider BRICS membership.
The BRICS coalition—originally founded by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining subsequently—has seen steady expansion in recent years, welcoming nations such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia.
