A male passenger on a Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi to Lagos died on Tuesday night after becoming unresponsive during the final stages of the journey, following reports of aggressive behaviour and an alleged attempt to open a cabin door while the aircraft was still airborne.
Kenya Airways confirmed in an official statement on Wednesday that a medical emergency occurred at approximately 9:20 pm Nigerian time—about 20 minutes before the scheduled landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The passenger was found unresponsive. Cabin crew administered first aid in line with their training and followed standard emergency procedures. The aircraft touched down safely at 9:41 pm and was met by medical personnel on the tarmac. After further examination, the medical team confirmed the passenger had died.
The airline expressed deep condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and apologised for any inconvenience caused by the incident. It said it is providing support to the family in coordination with local authorities and aviation regulators, while respecting the privacy and dignity of all involved. The passenger’s identity, nationality and age have not been publicly released.
According to Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the airline’s country manager briefed him on Wednesday morning. Achimugu said the passenger had been picked up in Madagascar after customs authorities denied him entry there. As the airline that had brought him into the country, Kenya Airways was required to return him.
Once on board the Nairobi–Lagos flight, the passenger reportedly became restless and aggressive. He allegedly attempted to gain access to the cockpit and later tried to open the rear door of the aircraft. Crew and passengers restrained him, tying his hands behind his back to prevent further disruption and ensure the safety of those on board. He was later found unresponsive and was declared dead upon arrival in Lagos.
“I don’t want to preempt the police investigation, but they have taken it over for now,” Achimugu said. He added that the deceased’s family could request an autopsy as the inquiry proceeds.
Passenger accounts circulating on social media, including from individuals who said they were on the flight, described panic as the man tried repeatedly to open a cabin or emergency door mid-air. One passenger said others quickly restrained him. These accounts have not been independently verified by the airline, whose statement focused solely on the medical emergency and did not address the reported disruption.
The Nigeria Police Force has assumed responsibility for the investigation into the circumstances of the death. No further official details on the cause have been released, and authorities have cautioned against speculation while inquiries continue.
The incident has drawn widespread attention across Nigerian and Kenyan media, highlighting both the challenges of managing in-flight medical and behavioural emergencies and the procedures airlines follow when a passenger is denied entry at a destination. Kenya Airways continues to work with regulators and the family as the police probe advances.
