Nationwide high school demonstrations in France intensified on Monday following an incident in Lens where a 15-year-old student lost a hand after picking up a police sting-ball grenade. The unrest, entering its fourth week, stems from student grievances over dilapidated facilities, overcrowded classrooms, and persistent teacher shortages.
The French Human Rights League criticized security forces for using disproportionate measures against minors, pointing to a lack of tactical restraint. More than 400 high schools experienced partial or total closures on Monday as student actions continued ahead of a planned national mobilization day. Protests in major cities like Paris, Bordeaux, and Lille involved street demonstrations, fireworks, and clashes with riot police responding with tear gas.
Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu convened emergency talks to address infrastructure overhauls and staffing gaps. Simultaneously, the government advanced legislation targeting parental financial responsibility for public property damage caused by minor protesters, a proposal met with sharp criticism from labor unions warning of disproportionate impacts on vulnerable families.
