The US military has swiftly withdrawn its entire fleet of B-1 heavy bombers from RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire following a suspected terror plot targeting the installation.
Pentagon officials confirmed that roughly a dozen American bombers stationed at the key British base—which has served as a launchpad for strategic strikes against Iran—were ordered to return immediately to home stations in the United States. The abrupt redeployment comes on the heels of heightened security alerts after counter-terrorism police intercepted a suspected plot late last month.
The security scare unfolded when armed officers arrested five British men in their early twenties near the perimeter after suspicious vehicles were reported. A sixth suspect, a dual UK-Iranian national, was subsequently detained in London. While authorities recovered containers of gasoline from the vans, no actual improvised explosive devices were located. All six suspects have since been released on police bail as the investigation continues.
British officials have indicated strong suspicions of foreign state involvement. Prime Minister Andy Burnham pointed to strong indications linking Tehran to the operation, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted the clear “hand of a foreign actor”. The Iranian regime has strongly denied any connection to the incident, dismissing the accusations as baseless while criticizing the UK’s diplomatic posture.
The sudden exit of the strategic aircraft highlights mounting security anxieties surrounding western military hubs amid ongoing friction in the Middle East.
