A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Imo State has sentenced a woman, Rose Okon, to six months’ imprisonment for assaulting her 14-year-old niece by pouring hot water on the girl’s head and body.
Chief Magistrate C.J. Nkwoada delivered the judgment on Friday, October 2, 2026, after Okon pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of assault. The court, however, gave the convict the option of paying a ₦50,000 fine in place of the prison term.
According to the charge sheet, the offence took place on September 19, 2026, at about 6 p.m. in Umuneke, Ngor Okpala Local Government Area, within the Ngor Okpala Magisterial District.
Okon, who had the teenager, Favour Emmanuel, in her care, was accused of pouring hot water on the minor’s head and body, thereby causing grievous harm. The charge was preferred under Section 355 of the Criminal Code, Cap C38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, as applicable in Imo State.
During the proceedings, prosecution counsel Sampson Obodo tendered photographs showing the injuries sustained by the girl. He also presented statements made to the police by the complainant, the victim, and officials of the Stand For Humanity Foundation, the human rights organisation that petitioned the police and facilitated Okon’s arrest.
After her conviction, the court invited Okon to make a plea in mitigation. She begged for mercy. Her counsel, Innocent Onyekwere, also urged the magistrate to temper justice with mercy and be lenient in sentencing.
The Stand For Humanity Foundation, led by its president, journalist and child-rights advocate Chidiebube Okeoma, played a central role in the case. Okeoma, who led more than 20 members of the organisation to court, told journalists after the judgment that the group initiated the petition and arrest to send a clear message that child abuse is a punishable offence under Nigerian law. He said the conviction would serve as a deterrent to others who maltreat children under their care.
The case has drawn renewed attention to the protection of minors and the legal consequences of physical abuse of children in Imo State and beyond.
