A young Financial Times journalist was reportedly seen waving his arms for help before disappearing beneath the water during a crocodile attack in Sri Lanka.

Paul McClean, a British journalist and Oxford University graduate, was 24 when he died in September 2017.

The story has resurfaced online in recent days, but the incident itself is not new.

ValidViewNetwork reports that McClean was killed nearly nine years ago after he entered a lagoon near Arugam Bay in southeastern Sri Lanka, an area known for crocodiles.

THE FINAL MOMENTS

McClean had been holidaying in Sri Lanka with friends. He had been surfing at Elephant Rock near Arugam Bay. He later walked towards a nearby lagoon.

Reports said he stopped to wash his hands. Witnesses saw him in distress and waving his arms before he was pulled underwater.

The lagoon was close to a location known locally as Crocodile Rock because of its crocodile population.

RESCUE OPERATION

After McClean disappeared, police and military personnel began searching the lagoon.Sri Lankan Navy divers eventually recovered his body.

Contemporary reports said the body was found in mud at the lagoon. A postmortem later concluded that drowning caused his death, while there were also injuries consistent with a reptile attack.

This distinction matters because some later headlines have described the death as being “eaten alive”.

The available contemporary medical reporting does not establish that description.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the more precise account is that McClean was dragged underwater in a suspected crocodile attack and died by drowning.

His body was later recovered.

WHO WAS PAUL MCCLEAN?

McClean worked for the Financial Times and was part of its fast FT news operation. He had graduated from Oxford University with a degree in French. He joined the Financial Times as a graduate reporter in 2015. His colleagues described him as talented and promising.

The FT’s management expressed condolences to his family following his death.

WILDLIFE AND TRAVEL RISKS

Crocodile habitats can overlap with popular tourist areas, particularly in countries where lagoons, rivers and wetlands are close to beaches and settlements.

The tragedy also illustrates why local warnings about wildlife habitats matter. A water body that appears calm may still contain large reptiles.

In McClean’s case, contemporary reports said local people knew the lagoon as an area with crocodiles.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the lesson from McClean’s death is not simply about a freak wildlife encounter. It also highlights the importance of understanding local warnings and avoiding entering water bodies known to harbour dangerous animals.
