Spain have been dealt a setback ahead of their upcoming fixtures after explosive winger Nico Williams was forced to withdraw from the national team camp due to a left thigh injury.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed that the 24-year-old Athletic Club forward picked up the knock during the closing stages of Tuesday’s dominant 4-1 UEFA Nations League victory over Croatia in Seville, where he came off the bench to net La Roja’s fourth goal.
Medical staff closely monitored the player during the squad’s subsequent day off, but persistent discomfort prevented him from joining Thursday’s training session. Following thorough diagnostic evaluations, it was decided that Williams would be released from the camp to head back to his club for dedicated rehabilitation.
Head coach Luis de la Fuente will not summon a replacement, leaving his squad at 25 players as they prepare for a busy stretch. World champions Spain currently sit comfortably at the summit of Group A3 with a flawless six points, following an opening 3-2 thriller against England at Wembley and their recent masterclass against Croatia.
La Roja will navigate their upcoming encounters—facing the Czech Republic on Saturday before traveling for a return fixture against Croatia—without the services of their dynamic forward.
