Nigeria Plans Special Energy Zones for 24-Hour Power

FG Targets 24-Hour Electricity in Lagos, Abuja, Kano

Nigeria’s Federal Government is targeting a different part of the electricity problem by focusing on areas where power demand is already high but supply is not consistently reaching consumers.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the government has begun discussions with electricity distribution companies over proposed Energy Zones intended to deliver 24-hour electricity to selected high-demand areas.

AREAS TARGETED

Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe said the proposed zones would initially focus on the Lagos axis, the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano corridor and the Enugu-Port Harcourt axis.

The targeted areas contain major commercial, industrial and residential concentrations. The government wants the zones to provide stable power to homes, businesses and industries.

WHY GENERATION ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH

Tegbe said Nigeria’s power constraints extend beyond electricity generation and transmission.

He pointed to the distribution end, particularly how much electricity can actually be taken up and delivered to consumers.

This means that even when generation and transmission capacity improve, consumers may still experience poor supply if distribution infrastructure cannot handle available power.

WHAT GOVERNMENT EXPECTS

The Energy Zones are expected to help unlock commercial and industrial demand, improve electricity delivery and strengthen the revenue and collection capacity of DisCos.

The government also wants infrastructure in high-demand areas to expand alongside the economy.Representatives of AEDC, Ikeja Electric, Eko Power Ltd.

IBEDC and Sahara Energy Group attended the discussions with the minister.

THIS IS NOT YET 24-HOUR POWER

The announcement is a plan, not a declaration that the affected locations already enjoy 24-hour electricity.Implementation will depend on infrastructure, generation availability, transmission capacity, distribution investment and the ability of DisCos to deliver the required supply.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the proposed Energy Zones are therefore still at the planning and engagement stage.

Nigeria’s electricity challenge is complex because generation, transmission and distribution are interconnected.

A successful Energy Zone would require all three components to work together, alongside adequate investment and commercially sustainable distribution.

The test of the proposal will ultimately be whether consumers in the selected areas experience measurable improvements in reliability and duration of supply.
