The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has strongly admonished the people of Ebonyi State to reject the presidential ambition of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle.
Speaking during a public address that has since sparked intense regional debate, Umahi accused political actors of exploiting regional solidarity only during election cycles while sidelining the state’s interests. He challenged the former governor to point to any tangible inclusion or political appointment extended to an Ebonyi indigene during his tenure in Anambra.
Highlighting historical grievances, the minister referenced the neglect of the historic Abakaliki Street, arguing that regional unity is often invoked selectively for ballot mobilization rather than mutual respect.
”It’s only when it comes to votes that they say we Ebonyi people are one with other states in the South East,” Umahi stated. “But when it comes to insulting us, they insult us. We are not second-class citizens in Igbo land. We have a right to decide what will be good for our people.”
Urging the electorate to assert their political independence, Umahi framed the choice as a decisive stand against systemic classism and historical subjugation, rallying residents to utilize their voting power to safeguard the state’s self-determination.
