Germany: Book visa slots free, ignore agent offers

Nigerians applying for German visas have been firmly reminded to use only official channels and ignore offers from agents or third parties claiming special access. The German Missions in Nigeria issued the latest clarification on Wednesday via their official X account, addressing widespread confusion about how applications and appointments actually work.

Applicants must first determine the correct visa type based on the purpose and length of stay. A Schengen visa covers short visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, typically for tourism, business, or family visits. A national visa is required for stays longer than 90 days, including employment, studies, vocational training, or certain family reunification cases.

The responsible German mission also matters. As a rule, the Consulate General in Lagos handles the bulk of applications. The Embassy in Abuja processes only limited categories for residents of specific northern and central states (including the FCT, Kano, Kaduna and others) who meet narrow criteria such as medical emergencies, official government travel, scholarship holders funded by German public funds, or certain diplomatic and high-level cases. Applicants should confirm jurisdiction on the official website before proceeding.

Booking an appointment is free and can only be done through the official online system. The missions do not accept appointment requests by email, phone or any other unofficial route. Sending documents by email to diplomatic missions will not secure a slot or advance an application. For many long-stay national visa categories, applicants can start the process online via Germany’s Consular Services Portal, upload documents for a completeness check, and later receive instructions for the mandatory in-person appointment. That appointment remains essential for biometrics, original document verification and an interview.

“You do not need to pay an agent just to book a visa appointment. The official appointment booking is free,” the missions stressed. They also warned applicants to select the correct visa category when booking; choosing the wrong one can force a complete restart. Each applicant, including children, needs a separate appointment. Those unable to attend should cancel in advance so the slot can be reallocated.

The repeated public warnings reflect a persistent problem. German officials have repeatedly stated that they do not work with, partner with or recognise any “visa agents.”

Claims of special access, guaranteed appointments or faster processing for a fee are false. Such intermediaries often create unnecessary expense, incorrect applications and delays. Official government information appears only on websites ending in .de or the accredited VFS Global platforms where applicable; correspondence from other domains should be treated with caution.

In recent years the process has shifted toward greater online preparation. Since early 2025 the Consular Services Portal has allowed many national visa applicants to submit details and supporting documents digitally before the in-person stage. For certain categories, particularly student visas, document submission and biometrics have been routed through designated VFS Global centres, including a dedicated facility in Lekki, Lagos, while final decisions remain with German consular officers.

Appointment slots can still fill quickly, so early booking through the official system is advised.

Applicants are also reminded that forged or incomplete documents lead to refusal, and that consistent financial records matter more than last-minute large deposits. Travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000 is standard for Schengen applications. Since mid-2025, remonstrations against visa refusals are no longer handled by the missions abroad.

The core message from the German Missions remains straightforward: identify the right visa category, confirm the responsible mission, use only the official free appointment system or Consular Services Portal, prepare complete original documents, and ignore anyone offering paid shortcuts.
