Odioama: Court Revisits 2005 Military Operation, Awards ₦20bn

ODIOAMA IS NOT THE SAME AS ODI

The distinction is important.Nigeria has another famous military-invasion case involving Odi community, also in Bayelsa state.

The Odi invasion took place in 1999, while the military operation at Odioama occurred in 2005.

The two incidents are sometimes confused because both involved military operations in Bayelsa and subsequent litigation.

The Odi case previously produced a major judgment awarding billions of naira in damages after a court found the military operation unlawful.

The latest development involving Odioama similarly brings questions of state responsibility, civilian protection and compensation back into national conversation.
