Second Wife Kills Co-Wife with Pestle in Bauchi Horror

A 33-year-old woman has been arrested in Bauchi for allegedly killing her co-wife with a pestle during a domestic incident that police say may have been linked to hallucinations.

The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed on Monday that Hauwa’u Haruna, the second wife in a polygamous household at Tafawa Balewa Housing Estate, struck 43-year-old Jamila Adamu on the forehead on Sunday, 27 September 2026. The attack left the older woman unconscious. She was rushed to the Specialist Hospital in Bauchi but was pronounced dead by a medical doctor. Her body has been deposited in the hospital mortuary pending autopsy.

According to the police, officers of the C-Division received a report of a domestic disturbance involving the two co-wives at about 4:05 p.m. on Sunday. Detectives quickly arrived at the shared residence, documented the scene and recovered the pestle allegedly used in the assault. Hauwa’u Haruna was arrested on the spot.

Police Public Relations Officer SP Nafiu Habib said preliminary findings indicated the suspect “allegedly acting under hallucinations” armed herself with the pestle and struck her co-wife. Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu has ordered the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for thorough investigation and eventual prosecution.

The commissioner expressed condolences to the bereaved family and warned the public against domestic violence. He also urged families to seek prompt medical and psycho-social help for anyone showing signs of mental health difficulties.

The incident has drawn attention once again to the risks of unresolved tension and untreated mental health issues within polygamous homes. No further details on the precise trigger for the confrontation or the husband’s reaction have been released. Investigations continue.
