The Independent National Electoral Commission has reaffirmed its neutrality ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Chairman Joash Amupitan declaring that the commission has neither a candidate nor a political party to favour.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Amupitan made the declaration during a visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli.
The INEC chairman said the commission’s responsibility was to protect the sovereign will of Nigerians and ensure that electoral choices were properly reflected.
He also urged traditional rulers to caution politicians and young people against violence.
Amupitan said INEC was moving away from the traditional culture of preparing for elections at the last minute, saying the commission had commenced testing, auditing and strengthening its systems well ahead of the 2027 polls.
The statement comes as political parties intensify preparations for the next election cycle. For INEC, the challenge is now to translate assurances of neutrality into visible institutional conduct throughout the electoral process. ValidViewNetwork reports.
