APM Demands Okpebholo’s Resignation Over N3,000 UK Fuel Price Comparison

BENIN CITY, Sept. 27, 2026 — The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has demanded the resignation of Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo.

This comes after Okpebholo compared Nigeria’s pump price of petrol with what he described as a converted N3,000-per-litre cost in the United Kingdom.

Findings show Okpebholo made the remarks on September 24 while speaking at the “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” event in Edo State.

Okpebholo while addressing the audience said: “When we complained about cost of petrol, I was in London last week. I told my friend, ‘Let’s go and buy fuel just to know the cost of fuel between Nigeria and England.’ Let me tell you, after conversion, it’s about N3,000-something for one litre of fuel.”

He went on to describe Nigerians as “doing very well here,” praising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms.

A Comparison APM Calls Reckless

In a statement issued Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the APM condemned the remarks as “reckless and irresponsible,” arguing that measuring naira-equivalent prices alone ignores the wide gap in income and purchasing power between Nigerian and British workers.

The party noted that Nigerian workers earn a minimum wage of about N70,000 monthly, against UK counterparts earning upward of £2,600, roughly N4.6 million, a month.

Citing Cheaper Oil-Producing Nations

Checks by ValidViewNetwork confirm the APM also pointed to Libya and Iran, oil-producing nations where it claimed petrol sells for between N41 and N52 per litre, arguing that Nigeria’s status as an oil producer makes Okpebholo’s comparison to a non-oil-producing, high-income economy especially “callous.”

The party further cited the contrast in public transport systems, saying Nigerian commuters contend with an informal and expensive transport network. The Nigerian situation is unlike the UK’s regulated system.

Warning of Public Unrest

Yusuf warned that the governor’s comments risk provoking public discontent and could be used to justify a further fuel price increase, at a time petrol already sells above N1,500 per litre nationwide.

He urged Nigerians to look toward the 2027 elections, where the APM’s presidential candidate, Engr. Seyi Makinde, would prioritise citizens’ welfare under what the party calls its “Reset Agenda.” ValidViewNetwork reports.
