Rabid Dog Attacks 18 in Kano’s Garko LGA, Two More Dogs Suspected Infected

KANO, Sept. 27, 2026 — At least 18 people have been bitten by a dog suspected to have contracted rabies in Garko Local Government Area of Kano State.

Checks by ValidViewNetwork confirms that the animal moved through five separate communities before the alarm was raised.

The Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS), Garko Division, said the incident followed a distress report received at its local office, after which it launched a search operation for the dog and two others suspected to be infected.

A Trail Across Five Communities

According to a statement by the NFSS Kano State Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSF Usman Abdullahi Umar, the dog first attacked and bit 11 people in Garko town itself before moving into neighbouring areas.

Findings show seven more people were subsequently bitten across Raba, Kadage, Gurjiya, and Dausai communities, bringing the total to 18 confirmed victims.

Two More Dogs Under Watch

The Service disclosed that two additional dogs are also suspected to have contracted rabies, raising fears the disease could spread further among animals and residents if not contained quickly.

Officers under the Divisional Forest Officer, Auwalu Muhammad, have since been deployed across the affected communities to locate and neutralise the suspected infected animals.

Residents Urged to Stay Alert

The NFSS urged residents of Garko and surrounding communities to remain vigilant, report stray or unusual-acting dogs immediately, and seek prompt medical attention if bitten or exposed to a suspected rabid animal. The agency said its officers would continue the search until the threat is fully contained. ValidViewNetwork reports.
