Hisbah Detains Eight in Jigawa over Alleged Same-Sex Acts

The Jigawa State Hisbah Board has taken eight suspects into custody in connection with alleged same-sex sexual acts in Kazaure Local Government Area, following a complaint by a 22-year-old resident who claims he contracted HIV as a result.

Public Relations Officer Dauda Muhammad Hadejia confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Saturday. The complainant, who lives in the Kanti area of Kazaure town, told the board that nine individuals had engaged in homosexual acts with him on separate occasions. He said he later tested positive for HIV, which he linked to those encounters, and asked the authorities to investigate what he described as deception that had seriously affected his life.

Operatives launched a search for the nine people named in the complaint. Eight have been arrested so far; efforts continue to locate the remaining suspect. According to the board, the eight men in custody admitted during preliminary questioning that they had taken part in the alleged acts with the complainant.
The Hisbah Corps said it has gathered statements and other evidence that will be presented in court once the investigation is complete. The suspects are expected to be charged after the probe concludes.

Deputy Commander-General Dr Hussain Yusuf Baban urged parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s upbringing and to monitor the company they keep. He also called on the public to fear God and remain mindful of the consequences of their actions. The board expressed appreciation for the continued support of the Jigawa State Government in carrying out its duties.

The case remains under investigation. Similar enforcement actions by Hisbah authorities against alleged same-sex conduct have been reported in parts of northern Nigeria in recent years.
