“Chained for generations” — Sani’s stark warning on the US mineral pact

“You can’t easily unsign” — Sani’s warning about a deal Nigerians haven’t fully seen

Amid the flurry of headline-grabbing agreements signed on UNGA 81’s sidelines, former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has zeroed in on one he thinks deserves far more scrutiny than a photo-op allows.

A reported $700 billion mineral exploration deal between Nigeria and the United States, signed by Solid Minerals Minister Dele Alake and US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau.

ValidViewNetwork can confirm that Sani’s core objection isn’t to the deal’s existence, he called it “a commendable achievement”, his objection is to the deal’s opacity.

He argues that details should have been made public earlier for parliamentary examination, so that Nigeria’s national interest and the interests of host communities could be properly weighed before signature, not after.

The security dimension Sani says can’t be ignored

Findings show Sani’s warning carries specific geographic weight.

Nigeria’s richest deposits of lithium, gold, rare earth minerals and uranium sit disproportionately in communities already grappling with banditry.

This means that any serious mineral exploration expansion inevitably intersects with the country’s most fragile security zones.

A mineral deal negotiated in New York conference rooms has to eventually be executed on ground where armed groups already contest state authority. This is a mismatch that Sani insists cannot be an afterthought.

“Not a swap to replace the Chinese miners”

According to reports gotten by ValidViewNetwork, Sani specifically cautioned against treating this deal as a geopolitical vending-machine transaction, swapping out Chinese mining interests for American ones simply to appease Washington.

He argues that Nigeria’s mineral wealth should be developed according to Nigeria’s own strategic interests. That it should not be treated as currency in a great-power competition Nigeria didn’t start and doesn’t ultimately control.

The generational stakes in his closing warning

ValidViewNetwork gathered that Sani’s most striking line, “this is a deal where even the unborn generation are chained to it”, deliberately invokes Nigeria’s long, uncomfortable history with resource-extraction agreements whose true costs (environmental, sovereign, generational) only became visible decades after signature, oil being the obvious precedent.

Whether $700 billion in mineral partnership becomes the resource-managed-well story Nigeria has never quite told, or another chapter in that same familiar cautionary pattern, will depend heavily on whether Sani’s call for parliamentary scrutiny is actually heeded, or simply noted and ignored, as such calls in Nigeria so often are. ValidViewNetwork reports.
