Defence Minister: Every Nigerian should undergo military training

ABUJA — Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), has floated a proposal that would once have sounded far-fetched in civilian Nigeria: mandatory military training for every citizen.

The Minister argues that direct exposure to the physical and mental demands of service would deepen public appreciation for the sacrifices troops make daily.

ValidViewNetwork can confirm that Musa made the proposal during an appearance on the African Leadership Podcast with Ken Giami, describing conditions such as hunger, exhaustion, sleep deprivation and long-distance movement as experiences every Nigerian should confront at least once.

The reasoning behind the proposal “Every Nigerian should be able to go through military training. It will give you a different perspective about life,” according to the former Chief of Defence Staff.

The framing according to CG Musa is a way to help civilians grasp what soldiers endure while carrying out security operations for extended periods, often far from family.

A message aimed at public criticism of the military

Findings show that Musa’s comments arrive against a backdrop of persistent public frustration over Nigeria’s long-running security operations, from the Sahel-adjacent northwest to the southeast and Niger Delta, where communities have at times criticised troop conduct or questioned the pace of results.

The minister appeared to be pre-empting such criticism, urging Nigerians to weigh the human cost borne by soldiers and their families before passing judgment on military performance.

Border security context

According to reports gotten by ValidViewNetwork, Musa also used the interview to address Nigeria’s worsening border-security challenges, attributing rising infiltration partly to instability in the Sahel following Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali’s withdrawal from ECOWAS.

He pointed towards strengthened security cooperation with Cameroon as part of the government’s response along the southern borders.

A proposal likely to spark debate

ValidViewNetwork gathered that whether mandatory military training gains any policy traction remains to be seen, given the significant logistical, financial and legal questions such a scheme would raise in a country of over 200 million people.

For now, the proposal stands as a rhetorical appeal for empathy rather than a concrete government policy, but one likely to generate spirited debate in the days ahead. ValidViewNetwork reports.
