Trump Threatens Iran With ‘Annihilation’ as Tehran Rejects US Contact

The United States and Iran have exchanged sharply different messages over the possibility of ending their conflict, with President Donald Trump warning of devastating consequences while Iran’s Revolutionary Guards say they have rejected direct contact with Washington.

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump said he faced a choice between reaching a deal with Iran and taking extreme military action against the country.

He used the word “annihilate” when describing what could happen if Tehran refused to reach an agreement.

The statement came as international diplomatic efforts continued around the conflict.

Trump also indicated that the possibility of a settlement remained open, saying Washington and Tehran were moving towards a potential agreement.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, however, delivered a different message.Its spokesman, Hossein Mohebi, said the Guards had rejected an attempt by the United States to establish contact, arguing that dealings with what Iran considers a hostile enemy would remain through military channels while diplomacy remained the responsibility of Iran’s foreign ministry.

A rejection by the Revolutionary Guards does not necessarily mean that all Iranian diplomatic channels are closed. Iran’s foreign ministry remains the formal diplomatic institution, while the Guards operate as a powerful military and political organisation.

That distinction becomes important when assessing claims about whether Washington and Tehran are actually talking.
