​SÃO PAULO — For nearly four years, Stephanie Arcanjo believed she was building a future with a charming gemologist named Eric Fauchene Lopes. They shared a home, ran a jewelry business together, and even discussed eventually moving to the United States. But what began as a fairy-tale romance unraveled into an international espionage thriller inside a Dubai hotel room, culminating in a federal police revelation that shook Arcanjo’s world to its core: the man she loved never existed.

​The relationship started innocently enough in São Paulo, where Arcanjo was working weekends at a nightclub. Lopes approached her, asking for her phone number with a playful challenge: if he could memorize it on the spot, they had to make plans. Captivated by what she thought was a clever trick, Arcanjo gave him the digits. He called the very next day, sparking a romance that quickly upended her routine.

​Trusting him implicitly, Arcanjo left her job to work alongside Lopes at his jewelry store. A year later, the couple relocated to Brasília to expand their enterprise, dreaming of a life abroad. Yet, shadows began to creep into the relationship as global tensions shifted. Following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine and subsequent disclosures regarding covert Russian operations in Latin America, Lopes’ demeanor changed. He grew increasingly withdrawn, traveled more frequently, and imposed strict rules—such as forbidding her from posting photos of them online and critiquing her appearance.

​The breaking point arrived during a New Year’s business trip to Dubai. Initially, the vacation proceeded normally, but on December 30, 2022, Lopes locked himself in the hotel bathroom for hours, accompanied by the persistent sound of a flushing toilet. When he finally emerged, his instructions were swift and chilling: Arcanjo had to pack her bags and return to Brazil immediately.

​It was the last time she would ever see him in person. Weeks later, communication resumed briefly via a Kazakhstan phone number. Under his remote direction, Arcanjo spent four months liquidating their shared assets, selling their cars and business, and terminating their apartment lease, funneling the funds to him. ​The true nature of her ordeal came to light in September 2025, when she received a sudden summons from federal authorities. Fearing that her former partner had dragged her into criminal underworld activity, Arcanjo instead discovered that “Eric Lopes” was a ghost—one of at least nine suspected Russian “illegals,” deep-cover intelligence operatives who used vulnerabilities in Brazil’s birth-record system to construct flawless local identities. Federal investigations revealed that Lopes’ real name was Aleksandr Andreyevich Utekhin.

​Reflecting on the surreal chapter of her life, Arcanjo admits to lingering fears but insists that speaking out is essential. “I am [afraid],” she noted, “but I think it’s important… at least I’ve got it out there.”
