Speeding, Vandalism Put Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway at Risk of Closure

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway could be shut within two weeks if motorists and other road users fail to stop persistent safety violations along the route.

The warning came from the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare, during an inspection of the highway on Monday.

Dare said the Federal Government was concerned about speeding, vandalism and other illegal activities along the road. He said the government would have no choice but to close the road if there was no improvement within two weeks.

Why the Road Could Close

The Lagos section of the coastal highway remains under construction, yet motorists have been using parts of it.

According to Dare, the road was not originally meant to carry traffic before the completion of its bridges. The government has therefore raised concerns about the safety risks created by opening the unfinished route to motorists.

The government says the Lekki-Epe Expressway remains available as an alternative if the coastal road is shut.

The warning also comes amid concerns over illegal parking, speeding and activities that could endanger both motorists and construction workers.

For many road users, however, the bigger question is whether enforcement can improve safety without creating another major traffic burden for Lagos. The Federal Government has now put a two-week window on that question.
