2027: Ajia Says Kwara Needs a New Political Direction Beyond APC, PDP

Kwara’s 2027 governorship race is already opening another front, with Nigeria Democratic Congress candidate Abdulmumin Ajia telling voters that the state should look beyond the two major parties that have dominated its politics.

Ajia made the argument while formally launching his campaign in Ilorin and unveiling what he called the “Forward Kwara Agenda.”

The candidate placed the APC and PDP at the centre of his criticism, describing them as representatives of what he called “old politics.”

According to Ajia, the problem is not simply which party occupies office but how government programmes are designed and delivered.He said the APC and PDP represent “the old approach of scattered projects, political convenience, and programmes that do not work together.”

Ajia’s alternative, as presented at the campaign launch, is built around linking several areas of government rather than treating them as separate promises.

His Forward Kwara Agenda identifies security, education, healthcare, transportation, agriculture, employment and grassroots development as connected areas of governance.

The message places the NDC campaign in a familiar position ahead of the 2027 elections: presenting itself as an alternative to the established political parties.

But the political reality is broader than Ajia’s declaration. INEC’s published list shows that the 2027 Kwara governorship election is set to feature candidates from multiple political parties, meaning voters will have choices beyond APC, PDP and NDC.

Ajia’s task, therefore, is not only to criticise the established parties but to persuade voters that his proposed agenda offers a sufficiently different approach to governance.

For now, his campaign has established its central message: Kwara, he argues, needs a political direction that moves beyond the established APC-PDP contest.

Whether voters accept that argument will be determined by the campaign, the issues that dominate the election and the choices Kwarans make at the ballot.
