A Sunday church journey ends in a family’s worst nightmareHe was driving his family to church. His birthday was the following day.

Instead of returning home after Sunday worship, Olatunde Joseph Ojelabi would spend his final days fighting for his life after a road accident, before dying at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

Now, his family is asking questions about what happened during the crucial hours after he arrived at the hospital.

ValidViewNetwork reports that Ojelabi’s brother, Kolawole Ojelabi, has alleged that the 46-year-old was left outside LASUTH’s Medical Emergency Unit for more than six hours after arriving at the hospital following a road traffic accident on September 6, 2026.

The family says hospital personnel told them there was no available bed.

The allegations were contained in a detailed account published after Olatunde’s death on September 12.

The account is the family’s version of events and has not, at the time of publication, been independently established by ValidViewNetwork.

The crash that changed everything

According to the family’s account, Olatunde was driving his family along Ijegun Road, Ikotun, on the morning of September 6 when a commercial tricycle allegedly made an abrupt turn while attempting to pick up passengers.

Trying to avoid the tricycle, he swerved and crashed into a stationary vehicle. The impact was severe. The family said the airbags deployed and that the steering wheel struck the right side of his face.

He was first taken to a private hospital but was subsequently referred to LASUTH because of the severity of his injuries.

According to the account, he arrived at LASUTH before 9:00 a.m. What followed is now at the centre of the family’s concerns.

“There was no bed”

Olatunde’s brother alleged that rather than being admitted immediately into the emergency ward, the injured man was left outside because the family was told there was no bed.

He described the alleged delay as lasting more than six hours. The family account states:

“Rather than receiving what we believed should have been immediate emergency attention, my brother was reportedly left outside the emergency ward because, according to the medical team on duty, ‘there was no bed.’”

The family says Olatunde’s condition later deteriorated. He reportedly began convulsing and subsequently suffered cardiac arrest.

According to the account, medical personnel then intervened to resuscitate him. The family says a tracheostomy was subsequently performed after consent was obtained, before Olatunde was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit.

Family says it was asked to clean blood

Another part of the account has raised questions about the family’s experience inside the emergency unit. Kolawole Ojelabi said the family was instructed to purchase a plastic bucket, towel and detergent to clean blood that had reportedly spilled on the floor.

He wrote: “I found it difficult to comprehend that, in the midst of a life-threatening medical emergency, the family of the injured patient was being asked to concern itself with cleaning the floor.”

That allegation, like the others in the account, requires a response from the hospital before any definitive conclusion can be drawn.

Who should find the ICU bed?

The family also questioned the process through which Olatunde was transferred to intensive care.

His brother said members of the medical team instructed him to go personally to the ICU to determine whether there was a bed available for Olatunde.

He described the experience as deeply distressing. “How does a system designed to save lives become so impersonal, so bureaucratic and, at its worst, seemingly so indifferent to a human life hanging in the balance?”

The family said it was subsequently informed that carers would have to be paid for an initial period of 10 days.

Communication became another concern

The family said several investigations and medications were undertaken during Olatunde’s first three days in the ICU. However, the family alleges that communication about his condition and treatment was inadequate.

According to the account: “We were asked to purchase medications running into millions of naira, but without sufficient explanation about the purpose of some of the medications, their expected benefits or the treatment strategy being pursued.”

The family eventually sought the intervention of a senior doctor, who reportedly briefed Olatunde’s wife and brother about his condition.

According to the family’s account, the doctor described him as:“He is still critically ill.”

That became one of the phrases the family says it will remember from Olatunde’s final days.

The question that now haunts the family

Olatunde died on September 12, six days after the accident and five days after his 46th birthday. His brother says the family is now left with one question that may take years to answer: whether earlier emergency intervention could have changed the outcome.

The family put the question this way: “Could things have been different if he had received immediate and appropriate emergency attention when he arrived at LASUTH before 9:00 a.m.?”

That is an important question, but it is not one that can responsibly be answered from the family’s account alone.

Only a proper clinical review, supported by the patient’s records, triage documentation, treatment notes, timing of interventions and expert assessment, can establish whether any delay contributed to Olatunde’s deterioration or death.

What LASUTH says about its emergency system

The allegations are particularly significant because LASUTH publicly describes itself as a major tertiary healthcare institution with a mission to provide high-quality healthcare.

The hospital currently lists its medical and surgical emergency services and states that they operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

LASUTH also has a Quality Assurance Department which says it monitors service delivery across patient-care points and focuses on clinical governance, safety, accountability and transparency.

The hospital has also acknowledged that Lagos faces pressure from shortages of healthcare workers and bed spaces.

In a 2023 publication, LASUTH said there was a burden of healthcare-worker and bed-space shortages in Lagos and described measures intended to ease pressure on the hospital system.

That background does not establish what happened to Olatunde.

It does, however, make an independent examination of the family’s allegations particularly important.

“This is about accountability”

The family has stressed that its complaint is not motivated by hatred for LASUTH or its personnel.Rather, it wants the circumstances surrounding Olatunde’s treatment examined.

His brother wrote: “I write this not out of hatred for LASUTH or its personnel. I write because I loved my brother. I write because his life mattered. I write because his family deserved better.”

He then called for the Lagos State Government, LASUTH management, healthcare regulators and other relevant authorities to examine what happened.

The family stated:

“If mistakes were made, they must be acknowledged. “If procedures were not followed, those responsible must be held accountable. “And if the system itself is inadequate, it must be fixed.”

What must now be established

There are several questions that deserve clear answers. Was Olatunde assessed and triaged immediately after arrival? Was there genuinely no bed available? What emergency interventions were considered or administered during the period the family says he waited? What caused the subsequent deterioration? When exactly did the cardiac arrest occur?

Were all appropriate trauma and neurological assessments conducted? What were the medical reasons for each major intervention?

And, most importantly, did any delay contribute to the eventual outcome? These are clinical and institutional questions, not questions that should be settled through social media arguments.

A death that should lead to answers

ValidViewNetwork reports that Olatunde’s case has now become more than a family’s private grief because the allegations raise a wider question about emergency healthcare in Lagos: what happens when a critically injured patient arrives at a major hospital and the system is under pressure?

No responsible report should declare that LASUTH caused Olatunde’s death without the evidence to establish that conclusion.

But neither should the family’s allegations be dismissed without examination.Olatunde arrived alive after a road crash. He died six days later.

Between those two moments lies a medical story that should be reconstructed carefully, objectively and transparently.

If the records show that appropriate emergency care was provided within the required standards, the hospital should be able to explain that.If the records reveal delays, failures or breaches of procedure, those findings should equally be acknowledged and addressed.

A grieving family deserves more than speculation. It deserves facts.

And every Nigerian who may one day arrive at an emergency ward after an accident deserves the confidence that the first question asked will be how to save a life, not simply where to find a bed.

Olatunde Joseph Ojelabi’s death should therefore become a call for evidence, accountability and reform, not another unresolved tragedy.

His family deserves answers, and the public deserves confidence that Nigeria’s emergency healthcare system will act with urgency when every second matters, ValidViewNetwork reports.
