Punting On Controversy: Roy Keane Defends Awoniyi’s Brutal Red Card!

​Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi is facing a three-match suspension after receiving a controversial straight red card during Coventry City’s 5-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion.

​The incident occurred in the second half of Sunday’s Premier League fixture during an aerial challenge between Awoniyi and Brighton defender Maxim De Cuyper. Referee Tony Harrington issued a red card for violent conduct after the Nigerian forward’s arm made contact with De Cuyper’s face, a decision subsequently upheld following a video review.

​The dismissal reduced Frank Lampard’s side to 10 men as Brighton compounded the pressure on the bottom-placed club, which remains without a point or a goal after four matches.

​The refereeing decision has ignited fierce debate among football pundits. Manchester United great Roy Keane acknowledged that the card felt severe while suggesting that Awoniyi’s body positioning ultimately invited the sanction.

​“I think the red card is a tough one. Awoniyi has raised his arm as he is waiting for the Brighton player coming in, but was it a real swing? I do not know,” Keane noted on Sky Sports. “I think it is harsh, but you have to ask Awoniyi, did you give the referee an opportunity to send you off today? The answer is yes.”

​Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer offered a stronger defense of the Nigerian international, questioning the rationale behind labeling a natural jumping motion as violent conduct.

​“Two players are competing for the ball. He jumps, his arm comes up naturally and catches De Cuyper. There is contact… But contact with somebody’s face cannot automatically mean violent conduct,” Shearer said. He further criticized the video review process for arriving at the harshest possible conclusion despite the availability of slow-motion angles.

​Awoniyi is now set to miss Coventry’s upcoming Carabao Cup clash against Aston Villa, alongside crucial league fixtures against former club Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.
