An Emirati man’s video of renewing his passport in just eight minutes at Dubai International Airport has gone viral, prompting a sharp and humorous reaction from a Nigerian X user who declared that many of his countrymen would dismiss the footage as artificial intelligence.
In the clip, the man recounts discovering during a safari that his passport had expired or was nearing the end of its validity. Advised to head to the airport, he was told the process would take about ten minutes. Instead, he walked away with a fresh passport in eight minutes. He displayed his old document before receiving the new one and publicly thanked UAE authorities and airport staff for the efficiency.
The service is not a one-off. Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) has operated a 24-hour Customer Happiness Centre at Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport for years, specifically to handle urgent passport renewals for Emiratis who discover last-minute validity problems.
Officials have reported processing times of seven to ten minutes in earlier years; more recent accounts and authority statements put some renewals at five minutes or less. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security has expanded similar rapid services across UAE airports, including Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi. Digital systems, biometric tools and streamlined procedures allow issuance of a new passport valid for up to ten years with minimal documentation beyond the old one.
The Nigerian X user’s comment—“Nigerians will think this is AI”—captures a wider sentiment. In Nigeria, passport applications and renewals frequently involve long queues, repeated visits, technical glitches and delays that can stretch into weeks or months. Recent reports of special intervention exercises for Nigerians abroad, including in the United Kingdom, have featured complaints of overcrowding, organisational problems and extended waiting times. The contrast between that experience and the UAE’s near-instant airport service has fuelled the mix of awe, envy and dark humour in online reactions.
UAE officials have long promoted the passport service as part of a broader digital transformation aimed at making government transactions seamless for citizens. GDRFA figures from previous periods showed thousands of airport renewals completed annually, with the centre designed precisely for travellers who risk missing flights because of an overlooked expiry date. The video simply made that everyday capability visible to a wider audience—and, in doing so, highlighted how differently public services can function when systems are prioritised for speed and reliability.
