FAROUNBI, MANDE DRAW LINE BETWEEN NATIONAL CRITIQUE AND ‘DEMARKETING’

ValidViewNetwork reports that Ambassador Yemi Farounbi and Prof. Samaila Mande have called for responsible national criticism that exposes Nigeria’s problems without deliberately damaging the country’s image.

The call was made during the third edition of the ValidViewNetwork Monthly Global Discourse, held virtually on Sunday, August 30, 2026.

The discourse, themed “Truth or Treason? Navigating the Thin Line Between National Critique and National Demarketing,” examined the difficult balance between citizens’ right to criticise their country and the danger of turning national weaknesses into tools for damaging Nigeria’s reputation.

The discussants stressed that patriotism does not require Nigerians to remain silent about national problems.

However, criticism, they argued, must be rooted in facts, values, diagnosis and practical solutions. They warned that criticism without alternatives can cross the line into national demarketing.

Criticism Is Necessary, But Responsibility Matters

The discourse maintained that national critique remains an important part of democracy. Citizens have the right to question government, interrogate policies and demand accountability.

However, the participants argued that exaggerated, unbalanced or weaponised criticism can erode public confidence and distort Nigeria’s image locally and internationally.

The discussants also rejected the idea that corruption and fraud should be described as part of a uniquely Nigerian identity.

According to the communiqué, such practices are vices rather than cultural identities, and Nigeria must reject narratives that permanently associate the country with them.

Government Must Close the Trust Gap

A major concern raised during the discourse was the growing trust gap between government and citizens.

The discussants linked the gap to opacity, inconsistent communication and the tendency of public officials to dismiss opposing views rather than learn from them.

They called for greater transparency and easier access to government data, noting that open information can reduce suspicion and strengthen evidence-based public debate.

NELFUND was specifically cited as an area where accessible data and transparency could help reduce doubt and criticism.

The discourse also criticised conflicting government messages, particularly on sensitive issues such as electricity generation and fuel subsidy removal.

The participants recommended unified communication frameworks to ensure that citizens receive clear and consistent information from government.

Crisis Communication Needs a New Approach

The discussants identified Nigeria’s reactionary response to crises as another weakness that can deepen public frustration.

They called for immediate, transparent and functional responses to national emergencies, alongside institutional mechanisms capable of anticipating risks and managing crises before they escalate.

Government agencies were also urged to establish documented crisis communication protocols and Standard Operating Procedures to improve consistency, accountability and clarity in public service delivery.

The discourse further stressed that government spokespersons must move beyond simply defending government and instead communicate its policies, achievements and vision more effectively.

Journalists who move into government communication, the participants argued, should acquire skills in strategic public relations, narrative management and stakeholder engagement.

The discussion also drew a boundary around government’s response to deliberate national demarketing.

While acknowledging that government can intervene against outright attempts to damage the country, the participants insisted that such intervention must remain within the law and respect citizens’ rights.

They warned against using the fight against demarketing as an excuse to suppress legitimate criticism.

The discourse consequently called for a clearly defined National Promise, describing it as a unifying statement of Nigeria’s values, aspirations and commitments that can guide governance and citizen engagement.

Influencers, Politicians Also Have a Role

The participants placed part of the responsibility on influencers and political actors.

Influencers were urged to fact-check claims and resist sensationalism, unverified information and emotionally charged narratives created mainly for clicks or financial gain.

Such practices can deepen public distrust and contribute to national demarketing.

Politicians were also urged to tell citizens the truth rather than rely on theatrics, half-truths and sensational statements.

The discussants argued that political communication can travel rapidly across the country and beyond, making irresponsible statements capable of damaging national credibility.

They further challenged Nigerians to hold elected representatives accountable and question leaders whose performance does not justify repeated returns to public office.

Nigeria’s Problem Is Not Lack of Ingenuity

The discourse rejected narratives portraying Nigeria as fundamentally incapable of progress.

Instead, the participants described Nigerians as resourceful people whose ingenuity can drive national transformation when supported by good governance, institutional structures and value reorientation.

They also called for a change in the political mindset that treats public leadership primarily as an avenue for wealth accumulation.

Leadership, they argued, must be redefined as service rather than accumulation.

The discussants also highlighted the importance of Nigeria creating conditions that encourage members of the diaspora to invest and do business in the country.

They identified openness, transparency and appropriate institutional frameworks as important to sustaining diaspora confidence.

A Mindset Reset for Nigeria

The third edition ultimately called for a deliberate nationwide mindset reset built around civic responsibility, national pride and informed engagement. The position was not that Nigerians should stop criticising their country.

Rather, the discourse drew a distinction between criticism that seeks to diagnose and solve national problems and narratives that exploit those problems for partisan or destructive purposes.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the central message of the discourse was clear: Nigeria needs citizens who can speak truth to power without losing sight of the responsibility that comes with national criticism.

The platform also received commendation for providing a space for evidence-based dialogue and was encouraged to expand its reach and engage more national stakeholders.

Fourth Edition Holds September 27

The fourth edition of the Monthly Global Discourse is scheduled for Sunday, September 27, 2026, as ValidViewNetwork continues its focus on evidence-based civic engagement and national mindset renewal.

The Monthly Global Discourse remains ValidViewNetwork’s signature conversation platform for connecting knowledge with action through discussions that bring global perspectives into contact with local realities.
