NDLEA Nabs Fleeing Drug Kingpin Festus Ibewuike Over Record 49.7kg Lagos Airport Heroin Haul

​The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully tracked down and repatriated Festus Ibewuike (alias Chidibest Ibewuike), a major fugitive drug kingpin who spent over two years evading justice following the interception of the largest single consignment of heroin ever recorded at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

​Ibewuike, 52, was smoked out of his hideout in Mozambique—where he operated a hotel business as a cover—following a coordinated regional intelligence network. He was apprehended on September 2, 2026, at the airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic, as he shuttled between his base abroad and Nigeria. With the collaborative backing of INTERPOL National Central Bureaus in Nigeria and Benin Republic, he was handed over to an NDLEA tactical team on September 4 and flown back to Nigeria to face the long arm of the law.

​The high-profile manhunt stems from a landmark 12-day intelligence operation by the MMIA Strategic Command in February 2024. During the operation, operatives intercepted 49.70kg of heroin meticulously concealed inside cartons of metal-cutting machines at the airport’s cargo terminal. The sweeping crackdown crippled the syndicate, resulting in the freezing of 107 bank accounts and the interim forfeiture of high-value properties tied to the drug cartel.

​Investigators revealed that Ibewuike ran his illicit enterprise remotely, utilizing proxies such as his wife, Confidence Ndidiamaka Ibewuike, who routinely took delivery of drug parcels tagged with his signature “ND” code. Following the initial bust, Ibewuike was charged in absentia before Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, under charge number FHC/L/205C/2024.

​While the legal wheel has already turned for some members of the syndicate—resulting in the conviction and sentencing of Adinnu Felix Chinedu, Osita Emmanuel Obinna, and Uzochukwu Frankline, with three others remaining on trial—Ibewuike chose the path of a fugitive. During preliminary interrogations following his repatriation, the suspect confirmed his identity and admitted to altering his moniker from Chidibest to Festus. On September 5, he was escorted to the NDLEA’s Central Exhibit Store in Ikoyi, where he formally identified the seized drug parcels bearing his trademark “ND” markings.

​Background checks by anti-narcotics investigators further unmasked Ibewuike’s deep-rooted history in transnational narcotics trafficking. He was previously linked to an older Federal High Court case (FHC/L/203C/2013) presided over by Justice Hadiza Rabiu Shagari concerning a 40.255kg methamphetamine seizure involving one Chidi Ihedioha, who bagged a prison sentence in 2023.

​Commending the seamless cross-border collaboration, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), hailed the repatriation as a defining victory against international drug syndicates.

​”This arrest is a major breakthrough in our resolve to track down and bring to justice every drug baron who thinks that fleeing Nigeria’s shores puts them beyond the reach of the law,” Marwa asserted. “Festus Ibewuike ran for over two years, hiding under a change of name and a new life abroad, but today he is back in Nigeria to answer for the 49.70kg heroin seizure linked to his network. This should serve as a fresh warning to fleeing suspects still at large: the Agency will not relent until every one of you is brought to book.”
