In a sweeping move to optimize national security architecture and reinvigorate ongoing counter-insurgency operations, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has sanctioned a strategic shake-up of senior military leadership across the Nigerian Army.
The high-level redeployment, announced in Abuja by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, affects several major operational theatres, critical command formations, and key administrative postings. Military authorities noted that the latest postings are tailored to inject dynamic expertise into critical sectors and align the service’s command structure with the realities of Nigeria’s evolving security landscape.
Key Command Changes
At the vanguard of the new postings is Major General IA Ajose, formerly of the Army Headquarters Department of Army Operations, who has been appointed as the new Theatre Commander for the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK). He takes over the reins from Major General AE Abubakar, who moves to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre (NAHFC) as the Dean of the Faculty of Operational Research.
Other strategic movements at the headquarters and institutional levels include:
- Major General AM Alechenu: Transferred from Defence Headquarters (DHQ) Garrison to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre.
- Major General RT Utsaha: Relocated from the Department of Army Standards and Evaluation to DHQ Garrison as Commander.
- Major General AM Umar: Moved from the Department of Civil-Military Affairs (DCMA) to take charge as Commandant of the Army War College Nigeria (AWCN), swapping places with Major General UM Alkali.
- Major General GS Muhammed: Transitioned from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to assume the role of Director General at the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation (NAFIC).
- Major General JE Osifo: Shifted from NAFIC to the Military Pension Board (MPB) as the new Chairman.
- Major General IE Ekpenyong: Posted to the DHQ Department of Defence Logistics as the Director of Engineering Services.
Operational Adjustments and Brigade Formations
The tactical tier has equally experienced targeted realignments to sharpen combat readiness in active zones:
- Brigadier General AA Bello: Moved from 6 Division Garrison/Sector 3 JTF South-South (Operation DELTA SAFE) to the DHQ Department of Defence Operations.
- Brigadier General MS Adamu: Redeployed from the Nigerian Army Women Command to head the newly established 8 Brigade as Commander.
- Brigadier General MS Sule: Shifted from the Special Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE to assume command of the 27 Task Force Brigade.
- Brigadier General I Sule: Transferred from the Directorate of Recruitment Management to take over as Commander of the 6 Division Garrison.
- Brigadier General E Azenda: Moved from the Land Forces Simulation Centre to command the 2 Division Garrison, while Brigadier General AS Bugaje swaps into the Simulation Centre as Director of Administration.
Charge to New Commanders
In handing down the directives, Lieutenant General Shaibu charged all newly appointed officers to validate the trust placed in them through uncompromising professionalism, operational innovation, and exemplary leadership. He emphasized that the primary focus must remain firmly anchored on safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity, extinguishing contemporary threats, and fortifying civil-military cooperation.
The military high command maintains that these structural adjustments will further bolster inter-agency collaboration and refine the force-employment framework required to sustain enduring peace across the federation.
