​The global race for football’s most coveted individual accolade is officially underway following the unveiling of the 30-player shortlist, but for Africa, the narrative remains stubbornly familiar. Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi and Senegal forward Sadio Mané stand as the continent’s sole representatives among the nominees, highlighting a persistent representation gap that has endured for decades.

​More than thirty years after Liberian icon George Weah rewrote history in 1995 by becoming the first—and still the only—African player to claim the Ballon d’Or, the continent continues its search for a successor. While African talents routinely dominate domestic leagues and continental tournaments, translating that brilliance into the ultimate global prize remains an uphill battle.

​A Legacy of Near Misses

​Both Hakimi and Mané are no strangers to elite recognition, having previously breached the upper echelons of global voting. Mané came agonizingly close in 2022, finishing as the runner-up behind Karim Benzema following a stellar year for both club and country. The Senegalese star also secured a fourth-place finish in 2019, during a vintage year that saw Mohamed Salah finish fifth and Riyad Mahrez take 10th.

No player plying their trade within an African domestic league has ever cracked the Ballon d’Or shortlist, underscoring a heavy bias toward Europe-based competitors. Furthermore, out of 54 nations on the continent, 39 are still waiting to produce their very first nominee.

​Cameroonian legend Samuel Eto’o holds the continental record for sheer consistency, earning nine consecutive nominations between 2003 and 2011, with a career-best fifth-place finish in 2009. Nationally, Nigeria leads the way in individual player representations with eight nominees, highlighted by Victor Osimhen’s eighth-place finish in 2023 and Ademola Lookman’s 14th-place rank in 2024. Ivory Coast commands the continent’s total nomination count with 15 nods, followed by Cameroon (12) and Nigeria (10).
