Marvel Studios has officially broken the silence on the future of its flagship cinematic franchise, announcing that acclaimed British actor David Jonsson will star as the new Black Panther in Black Panther 3.
Revealed during Marvel’s high-voltage Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con by returning writer-director Ryan Coogler, Jonsson is set to portray an adult T’Challa II—the son of the late King T’Challa and Nakia.
Discerning fans received immediate clarification from studio executives that Jonsson is not stepping in to recast or replace the late Chadwick Boseman. Instead, the narrative jumps forward, positioning Jonsson to carry the iconic mantle as the next generation of the royal bloodline. The character was first introduced to audiences as a young boy in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever under the name Toussaint, before revealing his true Wakandan name, T’Challa, paying homage to his father.
The casting cements a monumental milestone for the multi-award-winning actor. Born and raised in East London and a proud alumnus of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), Jonsson’s star trajectory has seen an meteoric rise. He first caught international attention portraying Augustus “Gus” Sackey in the hit BBC and HBO corporate drama Industry, before winning universal critical praise for his standout role in the romantic comedy-drama Rye Lane.
His crossover appeal deepened globally following his gripping turn as the synthetic human Andy in sci-fi thriller Alien: Romulus and his casting as Peter McVries in Stephen King’s The Long Walk adaptation. Culminating in his receipt of the prestigious, publicly voted BAFTA EE Rising Star Award, Jonsson has firmly established himself as one of Britain’s most magnetic contemporary talents.
While plot details remain heavily guarded, Jonsson’s introduction as the grown-up heir promises to pivot the franchise into a compelling new thematic era, exploring inheritance, legacy, and the evolving destiny of Wakanda.
Black Panther 3 is slated to hit global cinema screens on December 15, 2028.
