Tanzania Mourns First Gentleman Hafidh Ameir Hassan

​Tanzania is in mourning following the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who passed away at the age of 76.

​According to an official announcement by Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, Ameir died on Monday morning while undergoing treatment for an ongoing heart condition at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar. Funeral preparations are already underway in his home village of Kizimkazi on the semi-autonomous island.

​A trained agricultural academic and retired officer, Ameir maintained a deliberately low public profile throughout his life, stepping out of the spotlight even after his wife historic rise as Tanzania’s first female president in 2021. While holding the title of the country’s inaugural First Gentleman, he chose to focus on his private life rather than the political arena.

​The couple married in 1978, long before President Samia entered national politics. Together, they raised four children—three sons and a daughter. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, has followed a path into public service, currently representing constituents in Zanzibar’s House of Representatives within the National Assembly.

​Tributes have begun pouring in from across East Africa. Kenyan President William Ruto extended formal condolences on behalf of his administration, noting that President Samia had lost a lifelong companion and anchor, her children a devoted father, and the nation a respected citizen. Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye also joined regional leaders in sending messages of solidarity and strength to the Tanzanian head of state and the grieving family.
