The remains of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who was globally recognized as the world’s youngest reigning monarch when he ascended the throne at age three, arrived home in Uganda to a solemn national reception. President Yoweri Museveni joined grieving officials at Entebbe International Airport to receive the casket of the 34-year-old ruler, who passed away in the United States following a battle with cancer.
The somber homecoming marks the beginning of a nine-day official mourning period, even as an unexpected succession dispute brews within the royal hierarchy.
A Royal Return and Final Journey
Following the airport tribute, the king’s body was transported by military helicopter to Kyegegwa before moving onward by road to the Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal, where it will lie in state for public viewing and evening prayers. An official state-ordered burial is slated for next Saturday—coinciding with the date the monarch had hoped to celebrate his coronation anniversary, known as Empango.
Parliamentary leaders and dignitaries across Uganda’s political spectrum have lauded King Oyo’s three-decade reign, remembering him as a modernizer who championed youth empowerment, education, and public health initiatives, particularly HIV/AIDS awareness.
Emerging Succession Tensions
The late monarch’s passing has triggered immediate uncertainty regarding the future of the Tooro crown because he was not officially married. While Tooro Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki and the queen mother have indicated that the king left behind a young son whose identity will be revealed according to traditional rites, high-ranking members of the Babiito royal clan have publicly contested this narrative.
Senior clan figures voiced frustration over being kept in the dark regarding a designated heir, prompting government officials to step in. Culture Minister Henry Tumukunde urged restraint and unity, warning the public against unverified social media speculation while assuring that any succession matters will be handled strictly under the legal framework governing traditional leaders.
For now, the kingdom remains focused on giving its 13th monarch a stately final farewell, culminating in a church service and a traditional procession to the Karambi Royal Tombs.
