Former Liberian VP Jewel Howard-Taylor Remanded in Prison Over Massive $317M Drug Syndicate Probe

​MONROVIA — Former Liberian Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor has been remanded to the Monrovia Central Prison at South Beach following her initial court appearance at the Temple of Justice, facing a battery of serious charges tied to an expansive international drug trafficking and money laundering ring.

​The Monrovia City Court ordered the pre-trial detention of the 63-year-old former statesman after state prosecutors successfully blocked a defense plea for compassionate leave. Howard-Taylor’s legal team had requested her release citing medical complications, including asthma and high blood pressure. However, state prosecutors argued that such a prerogative rests exclusively with the Attorney General and Justice Minister and requires a formal written application. Siding with the state, the presiding magistrate emphasized that drug-related offenses are strictly non-bailable under Liberian jurisprudence, mandating continuous custody pending formal indictment.

​The high-profile legal development stems from an aggressive national security crackdown spearheaded by the Ministry of Justice and the Liberia National Police. Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman publicly linked Howard-Taylor to an active transnational narcotics network connected to the historic seizure of nearly four tonnes of cocaine—estimated at a staggering $317 million—discovered along the Roberts International Airport Highway in Duazon, Margibi County.

​Howard-Taylor was intercepted and detained at Roberts International Airport while preparing to board a flight to Accra, Ghana, purportedly to attend a women’s leadership forum. She now faces multiple criminal counts, including the unlicensed importation, sale, distribution, and transportation of controlled substances, illicit trafficking, criminal solicitation, criminal facilitation, criminal conspiracy, and money laundering.

​Authorities have stressed that the sweeping investigation reaches deep into previous political and security structures, underlining that no individual or political affiliation offers immunity. In tandem with Howard-Taylor’s arraignment, Liberian authorities have also filed charges in absentia against three foreign nationals—Croatian nationals Nikolai Ivancic and Mihovil Vrovac, alongside Ukrainian national Tara Zaderieko—alleged to be key cogs in the same international syndicate. Justice Minister Oswald Tweh confirmed that the government intends to deploy both domestic and international mechanisms to locate and apprehend the remaining suspects.

​Howard-Taylor, who served as vice president under former President George Weah from 2018 to 2024 and was previously married to former President Charles Taylor, remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. The case marks a dramatic escalation in West Africa’s ongoing regional battle against trans-Atlantic narcotics trafficking networks exploiting local transit corridors.
