The Federal Government has announced the scheduled arrival of another batch of 65 Nigerian nationals fleeing mounting hostility and renewed xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, the citizens are expected to touch down at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos at 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday.
The evacuees are scheduled to depart from the O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg at 3:30 p.m. local time aboard a South African Airways flight.
This latest emergency repatriation follows a similar rescue operation days prior, which saw 83 distressed Nigerians brought back home. Tensions have steadily escalated across parts of South Africa, triggering widespread fear, looting of migrant-owned businesses, and targeted violence against foreign nationals.
While commending the resilience of the diaspora community, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that the financial cost for the current batch’s flight tickets was entirely underwritten by public-spirited private individuals. The government lauded this philanthropic gesture as a testament to communal solidarity, noting that relevant federal agencies have been fully mobilized to receive, document, and assist the returnees with proper reintegration.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the lives and dignity of Nigerians abroad, stressing that diplomatic channels are continuously being explored to address the root causes of anti-foreigner sentiments with Pretoria authorities.
