Nigeria’s education system is facing a serious teacher shortage, with 31.8 million learners sharing just 592,077 teachers. The figures translate to an average learner-to-teacher ratio of almost 54 students for every teacher.
The number should concern policymakers because classroom size affects what teachers can realistically achieve.
A teacher handling a small class can identify struggling students. A teacher handling dozens of pupils has less time for individual attention.
The consequences can become especially serious in foundational education. A child who fails to master reading, writing and basic mathematics early may struggle throughout the education system.
But the problem is not simply the number of teachers. Nigeria needs qualified teachers. It needs them in the right locations. It needs to retain experienced teachers.
And it needs to ensure that teachers have classrooms, teaching materials and decent working conditions. A national average can also hide serious disparities.
Some schools may have relatively manageable class sizes. Others, particularly in underserved communities, may have far fewer teachers than they require.
That means recruitment alone will not solve the problem. The government must use reliable education data to identify where shortages are greatest and deploy teachers accordingly.
Nigeria’s demographic future makes this issue even more important. The country’s young population could become one of its greatest economic assets.
But that will happen only if those young people receive quality education. Millions of poorly educated young Nigerians would create a very different future.
ValidViewNetwork reports that 31.8 million learners are currently being served by 592,077 teachers, according to education-sector data. The figures should force a rethink of how Nigeria defines investment in education.
A school building is infrastructure. So is a laboratory. So is a library. But the teacher standing in front of the classroom is infrastructure too.
Without enough competent teachers, everything else becomes harder to use effectively.
