Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has underscored the critical role of physical fitness in promoting longevity, urging senior citizens to embrace routine exercises to ensure graceful and healthy aging.
Obasanjo made this call on Saturday after spearheading a 2.5-kilometre keep-fit trek across Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. He led roughly 100 members of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) Senior Citizens Club, traversing the route from the OOPL clubhouse to Iyana Mortuary and back.
Detailing the purpose of the exercise in a statement released on Sunday by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, the former Nigerian leader noted that the march served as both a public awareness drive and a motivational push for the elderly to remain physically vibrant.
”The essence of this, you can see that they are senior citizens, they are young Papas and Mamas,” Obasanjo remarked. “Normally, you can only be a member of the club if you are 70 and above, and I am just getting to that age.”
Highlighting the patronage of the Alake and paramount ruler of Egbaland, Obasanjo stressed that staying active is a vital instrument for navigating advanced age with ease and independence. He proudly drew attention to nonagenarians among the participants who completed the physical drill with admirable fitness.
The President of the club, Group Captain Ayobamiji Erinfolami (retd.), alongside close associate Elder Udo Umoren, lauded the former president for setting a remarkable pace, noting that his continued leadership provides invaluable motivation for senior members to maintain an active lifestyle.
