Bosses at the University of Glasgow have expressed deep shock and sadness following the death of former professor Jason Arday at the age of 41.
Mr Arday, who served as Professor of Sociology of Education at Glasgow from January 2022 to March 2023 before moving to the University of Cambridge, was found dead at a residence in South London. His death occurred just days after he resigned from Cambridge amid intense public scrutiny and allegations of plagiarism regarding his academic work.
The Metropolitan Police stated that the death is being treated as unexpected, but is not believed to be suspicious.
In the wake of the tragedy, political figures and academic colleagues have spoken out. Scotland’s First Minister described the situation as a deeply concerning case, urging commentators to reflect on the impact of harsh public words. Similar sentiments were echoed by political and academic leaders across the UK, who highlighted the immense personal toll exacted by intense media storms and public controversies.
