ACCRA — Swift intelligence-led operations by the Ghana Police Service have successfully dismantled a high-profile robbery syndicate targeting three major financial institutions in the upscale neighborhood of Labone. The daylight operation resulted in the fatal shooting of two suspects and the apprehension of a third, bringing a swift end to what could have been a catastrophic multi-bank assault.
According to official police statements, the security apparatus received actionable intelligence at approximately 10:45 AM on Thursday, August 13, indicating that a heavily armed criminal gang was staging vehicles near GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank in Labone.
An elite tactical response team was immediately mobilized to the scene, where operatives identified the suspects parked in close proximity to the targeted financial institutions. Realizing their cover was blown, the syndicate attempted a frantic escape.
The occupants of the first getaway vehicle sped away from the scene, triggering an immediate high-speed pursuit by law enforcement. Operatives successfully cornered and arrested suspect Augustine Okechuku Maazi, though an accomplice managed to evade capture on foot.
Simultaneously, a second vehicle carrying armed syndicate members attempted to break through the police perimeter under heavy gunfire. Law enforcement returned fire in the ensuing shootout, neutralizing two of the suspects.
Crime scene investigators recovered two sport utility vehicles—a Toyota Highlander bearing registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS 7915-17—alongside a blow pistol used by the syndicate.
The arrested suspect, Augustine Maazi, is currently in police custody aiding ongoing investigations, while the remains of the deceased suspects have been transferred to a morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The Ghana Police Service has lauded the vigilance and rapid response of the tactical team, reiterating its commitment to safeguarding financial institutions and citizens across the capital. Authorities continue to appeal to the public for timely and credible information regarding criminal networks operating within communities.
