Gbagada Expressway Grinds to a Halt After Two Separate Truck and Trailer Crashes

LAGOS — Motorists on the Gbagada Expressway endured hours of slow-moving traffic on Thursday after two separate accidents, one involving two major trucks and another involving two trailers and five other vehicles, disrupted the free flow of one of Lagos’ busiest corridors.

ValidViewNetwork gathered that officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), alongside tow trucks and a forklift, were deployed to the scene as a heavy build-up of vehicles formed along the expressway.

By the time of this report, one of the trucks involved in the first, larger crash had been successfully removed from the road, while efforts were continuing to clear the second.

Findings show a separate accident scene further along the expressway, near the Charlie Boy area, also drew LASTMA’s response. The five vehicles caught up in that crash had already been evacuated by the time officials spoke to reporters, with a tow truck working to remove the two trailers still blocking the road.LASTMA:

Speaking at the scene, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki said the agency had been on ground since 5 a.m. battling to restore normalcy to the expressway.

He confirmed that the first truck had been cleared roughly 45 minutes before he spoke, with a forklift and two tow trucks already deployed and a crane being arranged to complete the operation on the remaining vehicle.

On the secondary crash near Charlie Boy, Bakare-Oki said all five vehicles involved had been evacuated, with a tow truck at the scene preparing to remove the two trailers still obstructing traffic.

He assured commuters that the agency had “every equipment” needed and would put all hands on deck to fully clear both scenes.

What happens next

As of this report, LASTMA had not given a firm timeline for when the expressway would be fully reopened to normal traffic flow, though officials indicated the arrival of the requested crane would be decisive in completing the clean-up of the first crash site. Motorists were advised to seek alternative routes where possible until both scenes are cleared.
