Thailand’s security and gun control frameworks face intense renewed scrutiny following a brazen daylight assassination in Nonthaburi province, just north of Bangkok. Former Member of Parliament Chalong Riewrang fatally shot Thongchai Yenprasert, chairman of the Nonthaburi local government administration, following a long-standing financial dispute.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the attack occurred outside a government building. Chalong pursued Thongchai to his vehicle to demand the repayment of a debt spanning several million baht. When the victim attempted to drive away, the confrontation escalated into gunfire. Thongchai suffered a fatal neck wound and succumbed to his injuries at Phra Nang Klao Hospital, while his driver sustained arm injuries.
Chalong was swiftly apprehended and brazenly confessed to journalists at the local police station. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul condemned the act, stating that authorities would pursue full legal action regardless of the suspect’s political background.
The high-profile killing compounds national anxiety, occurring only days after a 14-year-old student went on a tragic shooting rampage at a school in the same province. In response to the back-to-back tragedies, the Thai government has pledged immediate crackdowns on illegal public firearm possession and stricter enforcement of gun control laws across the country.
