The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has announced its withdrawal from the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU).
The nursing body made this known in a letter dated 27 April, 2023 and signed by its general secretary, Comrade Thomas A. Shettima, a copy of which was obtained by ValidViewNetwork.
“NANNM as one of the members of JOHESU wish to formally write and inform you and all other members that it has withdrawn its membership from JOHESU”, the letter reads.
JOHESU which comprises of 5 registered professional health unions was formed to fight their members common interest which include common salary structure of their members at all levels of health care system.
The nursing union noted that JOHESU should have been dissolved having achieved its objective with the creation of Consolidated Health Salary Structure, (CONHESS).
“The product of the unity brought about the salary structure known as CONHESS. It was expected that after the objective was achieved, the industrial would resume their individual mandate as approved by the office of the registrar of Trade unions. However this was not done for reasons best known to the unions.”
The union further stated that JOHESU will no longer represent and/or negotiate on its behalf.
“To this end, JOHESU has seized to represent and/or negotiate on behalf of the entire nurses and midwives in Nigeria at all levels of health care system.”
It would be recalled that there had been moves in the past by the NANNM to pull out of JOHESU, ValidViewNetwork reports.
