The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has called on the Federal and State Governments to expedite the release of funds required to implement the newly signed 2026 agreement. The demand was issued in a communiqué following the union’s 55th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, held from July 22 to 24, 2026, and signed by National President Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim.
The union lauded the June 29, 2026, signing of the Federal Government-SSANU agreement as a historic milestone following years of intense negotiations. The pact secures a 35 per cent upward review of salaries via the Consolidated Non-Teaching Staff Salary Structure (CONTISS), enhanced earned allowances, improved staff training, and safeguarded career progression paths for qualified degree holders up to CONTISS 15.
Emphasizing the urgency of full compliance, SSANU insisted that the terms must be enacted promptly without encroachment or discrimination. The union specifically urged authorities to clear outstanding salary arrears and immediately activate the Implementation Monitoring Committee to prevent violations. Furthermore, it cautioned university managements against subjecting members to punitive postings, delayed promotions, or harassment over lawful union participation.
Addressing institutional funding, SSANU acknowledged the Federal Government’s HOPE-EDU initiative alongside the 2026 Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) intervention of roughly ₦2.53bn earmarked for public universities. However, the union stressed that TETFund allocations must remain supplementary rather than substitute regular statutory government budgetary releases and the fulfillment of the ₦1.3tn public university revitalisation commitment.
On broader national issues, SSANU raised concerns over escalating food inflation and prevailing security challenges across schools and highways, while offering conditional support for state policing under strict constitutional safeguards to protect workers and journalists.
