SAPS Under Fire Over Torture Death of Nigerian in Cape Town

​CAPE TOWN — The Nigerian community in South Africa is demanding swift justice following the alleged torture and killing of a Nigerian man by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Cape Town.

​The victim, identified as Mr. Chika Ibe from Lokpaukwu in Abia State, reportedly died on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at the Parksig Villas Complex in Belleville. According to reports, Ibe succumbed to injuries sustained from severe beatings, physical abuse, and alleged suffocation during a police operation.

​The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) has strongly condemned the incident. Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, President of NICASA, described the allegations as deeply disturbing and a severe violation of human rights and the rule of law.

​”Every officer found responsible must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. There can be no justification for torture, excessive force, or the unlawful taking of human life,” Onyekwelu stated.

​NICASA has formally called on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and SAPS leadership to launch an immediate, transparent, and comprehensive investigation. The association also urged the Nigerian diaspora in South Africa to remain calm and law-abiding, discouraging any retaliation while legal avenues are pursued.

​Diplomatic channels are already being mobilized, with NICASA vowing to collaborate closely with Nigerian diplomatic missions to ensure accountability.

​This tragedy marks the latest in a series of violent incidents involving foreign nationals in South Africa this year. Earlier incidents include the alleged killings of Emeka Charles Iroegbu by Tshwane Metro Police in Pretoria and Musa Yunana Joe in Witbank, Mpumalanga, which have previously triggered official condemnation and parliamentary inquiries from Nigerian authorities.
