IBADAN — The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan (UI) has named Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as the 14th substantive Vice-Chancellor of Nigeria’s premier university.
The appointment was announced by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Chief Adebisi Akande, following a competitive selection process that pruned an initial pool of eight contenders down to five finalists.
According to Akande, the statutory selection timeline kicked off in April with advertisements in national dailies. Following a search team augmentation that brought total applicants to eight, the Council conducted independent scorings before a Joint Council-Senate Selection Board finalized interviews.
Professor Olapegba, an esteemed professor of Applied Social Psychology, former Dean of the Faculty of the Social Sciences, and the institution’s current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), triumphed over a field that included several high-ranking academics.
He is set to take the reins from the outgoing administration when the incumbent’s tenure concludes.
