The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has dismantled a notorious criminal syndicate specializing in the armed hijacking of commercial vehicles belonging to drivers attached to e-ride-hailing platforms such as Bolt and Uber.
Parading the suspects at the command headquarters in Abuja, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, disclosed that the breakthrough followed an intensive, intelligence-led operation executed by the command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU).
The suspects were identified as Ibrahim Ismail, Ahmad Umar, Riskwa Shehu, and Umar Abubakar.
Modus Operandi
According to preliminary police investigations, the gang’s modus operandi involved posing as regular commuters. The suspects would book rides through digital transport applications to lure unsuspecting drivers to designated locations.
Once inside the vehicles, they would launch coordinated attacks, violently dispossessing the drivers of their automobiles, mobile phones, and other personal valuables before escaping.
Recoveries and Next Steps
Operatives successfully tracked and apprehended the syndicate, recovering two vehicles allegedly carted away during their operations. The recovered exhibits include an ash-colored Toyota RAV4 with registration number YAB 240 DL and a grey Honda Civic bearing registration number ABC 72 JP.
While reaffirming the command’s commitment to eradicating violent crimes across the nation’s capital, CP Sanusi lauded residents for providing timely and actionable intelligence. He noted that the ongoing collaboration between the public and security agencies remains vital in safeguarding lives and property.
The police confirmed that comprehensive investigations are drawing to a close, and the suspects will soon be formally charged to court.
