Nigeria recorded a major breakthrough in global travel authentication after the Nigeria Immigration Service completed the importation of all Country Signing Certificate Authorities into the ICAO Public Key Directory. The move strengthens Nigeria’s digital identity infrastructure and restores seamless passport verification across international borders.
Global Authentication Restored
ValidViewNetwork reports that the integration resolves long‑standing verification issues faced by Nigerian travellers at foreign airports.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the update allows automated border systems to authenticate Nigerian electronic passports without manual checks.
The Comptroller‑General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, completed the process at the ICAO headquarters in Montreal. The Service Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, confirmed the development in an official statement.
Chain of Trust Established
Akinlabi said the exercise established the required chain of trust for Nigeria’s electronic passports. “With the completion of the import process of all Nigeria’s existing CSCAs on the ICAO Public Key Directory to establish a chain of trust, Nigerian Passports can now be verified seamlessly by border control systems in all ICAO PKD member states,” the statement read.
The ICAO Public Key Directory serves as the global platform for sharing cryptographic certificates used to verify electronic passports. Without these certificates, border systems struggle to authenticate embedded passport chips, causing delays and secondary screening.
Travellers Previously Faced Difficulties
ValidViewNetwork reports that the authentication gap had caused difficulties for Nigerian travellers in Europe and North America. Some travellers experienced manual checks and extended screening, ValidViewNetwork reports.
The Ministry of Interior coordinated the integration under Minister Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo. The ministry described the achievement as proof of the Federal Government’s commitment to secure digital identity management and international border cooperation.
Nigeria’s successful integration into the ICAO Public Key Directory marks a decisive step toward modern border security. The development boosts global confidence in Nigerian passports and strengthens the nation’s digital identity framework, positioning Nigeria for smoother international travel and stronger global mobility.
